How Three CEOs Made Their Businesses Succeed During a Pandemic

A pandemic is an illness epidemic that often extends outside of the nation where it first appeared. Examples include the 2014 Zika outbreak in Brazil and the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa. They are a catastrophe for world health. They may also present a chance to strengthen firms' resilience and alter them.

Soren Skou's plan aims to benefit all of his workers and, essentially, the entire globe. Additionally, he is placing a significant wager on the fleet of his business, which accounts for 0.1% of global emissions.

Maersk is a massive international shipping and logistics company that manages supply networks for businesses like Nike and Walmart. Last year, the Danish business sent nearly one out of every five containers globally.

Despite the global COVID-19 virus epidemic and supply chain constraints, Maersk anticipates trade volumes to revert to pre-pandemic levels and expand gradually but steadily swiftly.

Soren Skou, the CEO of the container shipping company, intends to step down in January 2022 and be replaced by Vincent Clerc as the head of Maersk's Ocean & Logistics division. Clerc, a longtime employee, has held several key positions at Maersk since entering the business in 1997.

A two-sided online marketplace called Airbnb links travellers with hosts with available rooms. Lowering the cost of lodging while allowing hosts to generate extra cash from unused areas adds value for both parties. Chesky had an enormous job ahead of him to get Airbnb back on track after it lost 80% of its business in only eight weeks. However, he claimed to have a clear plan of action.

He described a strategy for increasing host recruitment that included streamlining the onboarding procedure, equipping hosts with new tools, and emphasizing the customer experience. Additionally, he disclosed that the business would introduce several significant product advancements in 2021, such as a simpler method for visitors to locate listings that meet their demands.

He also referred to the expanding host community on Airbnb, particularly those who have experience as professors, students, or members of the medical profession. He has made it his goal to support them because he feels they should be in control of deciding how Airbnb will develop in the future.

A Fortune 500 firm that manufactures soft drinks, snacks, and other goods are called PepsiCo (PEP). One of the world's most prosperous food and beverage firms, CEO Indra Nooyi built the company over her 24-year career. Nooyi encouraged the corporation to produce healthier products as part of her plan. She achieved this by focusing on developing dishes with less salt, fat, and sugar.

She also paid attention to reducing the company's environmental impact. Due to these adjustments, the company's sales increased from $35 billion in 2006 to $63.5 billion in 2017, and Nooyi resigned as CEO and board chairperson in early 2019.

She also put a lot of effort into making Pepsi more design-focused. She appointed famous designer Mauro Porcini as the business's first chief design officer, and she often went to marketplaces to check out how the company's goods appeared on store shelves.

To re-establish sustainable development in its core dairy, plant-based, water, and specialized nutrition divisions, Danone's strategy—announced by its CEO Antoine de Saint-Affrique and a stronger leadership team—involves several key initiatives. Additionally, it intends to switch from a category-led to a local-first business strategy.

Over the past ten years, Danone has grown its company by entering new markets and doing business on other continents. The corporation now has to figure out how to handle everything worldwide while preserving its goods' and services' effectiveness and calibre. It required upgrading its B2B channels. It started digitizing its goods and business procedures to simplify logistics and give its clients better service.

The business hired three deputy CEOs to oversee its operations in North America and internationally. The current CEO of Danone International, Veronique Penchienati-Bosetta, will serve as group deputy CEO, CEO international, and EVP for specialized nutrition, waters, international marketing, and digital. Danone North America's current CEO, Shane Grant, will lead Latin America.
